Is it true that bio-engineered foods don’t reproduce?

I was at the farmer’s market and this guy said that if I buy a bio-engineered potato then it wont sprout eyes (the little new roots on the skin) like a regular potato does. It’s a fact that a regular potato can be planted and grow a whole new plant, roots grow right out of it’s skin. But is it true that bio-engineered potatoes don’t reproduce?

BTW, I asked this in a couple of other sections but I didn’t get enough information (or answers) so I’m asking here.
Thanks! Eri, I actually read an article basically saying the same thing. Bioengineering is just doing it on a different level. I kind of got the feeling that he was trying to scare me.
Leviticus, it would be hard to test that out because the FDA doesn’t require anyone to label bio-engineered products “bio-engineered”. I guess if I got a potato from the supermarket and it didn’t sprout roots then I would assume it was a bio-engineered potato but otherwise I wouldn’t really know.

No, that’s not true. Bioengineering is pretty much what we’ve been doing for thousands of years with food – selective breeding techniques. Bioengineering is simply a more efficient method of doing it. He was just trying to scare you into buying all your food from them and not eating ‘genetically modified food’ – but all food has been genetically modified. Ever seen a real wild banana? It’s barely digestible. We’ve been genetically modifying things for thousands of years.
