I want to plant a garden of vegetables. What do I need?
I am going to plant on the side of my house. Am making a planter box about 4 foot wide by 8 feet long. So nothing huge. But the dirt over there is hard pan.
I went to Home Depot and they have some type of potting soil that also says for seeding. They also have some organic soils and a few other items. What do I need to buy for soil?
I live in Mexico. So I may not have access to everything. As well as I am not sure how well versed the employees are over there?
I would amend the soil with a mixture of aged manure, compost and sand to keep it from compacting. Then if you are doing a raised bed garden soil can be purchased for the upper level.
As far as plants go, do some companion planting. This is simply planting early crops – lettuce, carrots, radish and spinach – between later producing plants such as peppers and squash. The early crops will be finished by the time the peppers need the space.
Another space saver is to go vertical. Vining plants – cucumbers, pumpkins, melons & winter squash…- can be trained to climb a trellis. Just be sure to support the fruit with netting tied to the trellis as they get larger or it may break the vine. (Not such a concern for cucumbers, just the larger fruits.) This saves a great deal of space as the only ground space needed is where the actual vine is growing.
Good luck!
