I am own my way to San Angelo, Texas!!!?
I am going to the goodfellow afb for AIT training for 29 weeks. I am married and I plan on living off base with my wife and son and I am sure I will be able to.
What I wanted to know was what are some good places to rent to live?
What are some fun things to do on time off there?
Is there anyone who lives there who knows of any good book stores, coffee shops, all natural and or Organic Food shops there.
I have been searching online and nothing comes up so I know it is a small town but it still has to have some things to do?
Any help would be appreciated.
my husband and I were there when my husband re-classed. It is a nice but very small community. It has grown quite a bit over the years but a lot of their restaurants are not online because of how new they are..lol. We lived off post (they don’t have a lot of on post housing). My son attended Bowie Elementary and we really liked the school. What rank are you? If you are Army and not prior service you will likely not be allowed to live off post until around the 11 week mark. Your family can move and live off post and set the house up for you when you get permission to live off post. If you are prior service you shouldn’t have any problems. I would check out ahrn.com for housing.
As far as fun things to do…
there are a lot of nice parks around San Angelo
there is a a fun downtown area that has some shopping
there is a sports program for kids but you have to be there for the exact sign-up times because they aren’t flexable.
There is a mall
a movie theater
there is a place similar to chucky cheese (I can’t remember the name) but it is close to applebees
there are 2 pools on post that we LOVED and it really helped shake the hot weather
there is also a lake that people like to go to
The closest city is an hour and half away so be prepared to travel if you want activities away from San Angelo.
All and all we enjoyed the area. Good luck at Goodfellow..it is a very small base but a nice one. They do have a great CDC on base and they have a parent’s night out once a month which I thought was great!
edit..usabrat…If he is Army it is AIT. They have all services there not just airforce at Goodfellow. Airforce tech school is seperate from the Army’s AIT.
FYI and correction…there are several leases in San Angelo on a regular basis that are short term leases. They are VERY use to a large turn over in tenants. We had a great landlord that worked with us without having to ever see our orders (even though we were allowed dependents in our move). I would check your orders for dependent move so that the Army will foot the bill for the move. If it doesn’t allow it then work with your command once you get there they may work with you. The Drill SGTs were quick to help out their soldiers on Goodfellow. If you have any other questions or your wife has questions please feel free to email me
osufbrat- to my understanding quite a bit has changed there as the base population has increased. It wasn’t the most friendly military town but finding other military isn’t a problem..lol
