Set in the beautiful city of Abilene, Kansas is a part of history and it is named the Old Abilene Town. In this portion of the city is a replica of old buildings to celebrate the earliest parts of history. It was in 1950s that this old town was rebuilt. Some of the buildings here are original and were just moved to be a part of Old Abilene Town.

During the weekend festivities, Old Abilene Town sprang back to gain back life as the National Day of American Cowboy is celebrated there. Jeff Sheets of the Dickinson County Historical Society donned on a cowboy hat in the celebration of this event which happened last Saturday. He also shared that Old Abilene Town is the appropriate venue for this activity because of its historic relevance. It can be noted that history began in 1867 when Chrisholm Trail was developed and it then paved the way for economic growth for cattle farmers and the state as well.

Improvements and renovations are also taking place in Old Abilene Town. Sheets also shared that a new boardwalk is being made in front of the buildings in the West Side of Texas. T.C. Henry’s buildings’ roof is nearly completed and several others minor restorations are in order to complete the 19th century feel.

Another big factor why Old Abilene Town is gaining attention again is the concern of residents. They are actually part of the government’s efforts to restore one important piece of history. Sandy Howard, one of the resident-volunteers, helped in demonstrating what life was during the 19th century. She cooked chili on the campfire using a Dutch oven. A replica of a 19th century chuckwagon was provided by the Dickinson County Historical Society.

The whole family then participated in re-enacting how life was during the cowboy years. Women would get up early to cook for their family and after they have taken their breakfast, they would ride to their wagon truck and look for food. Men also showed how to go on a hunt. Children also have their part in gathering buffalo chips and in kindling the fire.

Because of these re-enactments, Sandy Howard now shares how difficult life was back then. She shares to people how mothers during that period divided their time to care for the family and at the same time educate them of the ways of life. She also has a view on how efficient cookware that were used back then and how some still exist in the market today – like skillets and the Dutch oven.
