Where should we live in San Antonio?

My little family (hubby, baby, and me) are moving from Berkeley, CA to San Antonio. Right now we live in a historic home close to the farmers’ market, tons of locally owned stores and restaraunts, and parks. We pretty much walk everywhere. Is there an area in San Antonio that has more of a California, slightly tree-hugging, historic feel that is safe?

Nope. Sorry. Texas is more suburban and you need a car to drive everywhere. There’s no real metroplex feel, maybe if you move to smaller town like New Braunfels or Fredericksburg, you migth better off safety wise.

Edit: I lived here almost all my life. If you have ever traveled you will realize how hokey this city is. King William is a nice neighborhood is you have $$$ and Monte Vista is near the slums around Frederickburgs Rd and such. Southtown is ok if you don’t mind overpaying on a condo that overlooks tenament housing from the 1950s. I wouldn’t walk around there after dark. But there really isn’t a real historic district like that in Philadelphia or Boston.
