Why do Americans tolerate such crappy tasting vegetable produce in supermarkets?
For example, tomatoes. Real tomatoes taste meaty and flavorful, very intense, just like any other fruit. But the kinds of tomatoes for sale in American supermarkets are bland, watery, horrible balls of waste. Why do people put up with that?
I only buy heirloom tomatoes, mostly from the farmer’s market, and from greenhouses in the winter. Why would anyone buy the waxy crap from Florida that ends up in the supermarkets?
Most Americans just don’t know any better. I only buy produce from farmer’s markets. Most of the time, they’re still not quite up to my personal standards, but hey, it’s better than nothing, right?
