It’s been my dream for some time now to go to UCSB, but do I have a chance?
I am an african american junior in high school, with a cumulative gpa of 3.71 unweighted. Next year I will be taking 3 ap classes. For extra-curriculars I have had a part-time job working for a non-profit Farmers Market and have at least 1000 hours, and am also in a club at school where we decorate/re-model houses of the poor, retirement homes, etc. I took the psat a little while back, but didnt do very good on it. It said that I could expect to get about a 1500 of the sat. I will definately be studying for the sats and possibly taking sat prep-courses, so i do hope to improve my score dramatically. Do I have a chance at getting unto UC santa barbara?
P.S. please don’t sugar coat anything. I’d rather be told the truth than get my hopes up and realize later that I never really had a chance
Thanks for the advise!
Bump up your hours to 20 a week (you already have 19, assuming you meant 1000 in one year) to better your chances. If you are low income, you’re almost guaranteed a spot with recent admission changes.
A 3.71 unweighted is very good, but you’ll want to take some community college classes over the summer to bump it up further- lots of UC applicants have APs starting in sophomore year. Sign up NOW for the March SAT (I think the deadline is the end of the week), see how you do, and then go into intensive SAT prep, or you won’t have a prayer; UC admissions are heavily dependent on SATs and SAT IIs. Score an 1850+ at very least, and a 650+ at least on your SAT IIs.
Become president or vice president of that club you mentioned- UCs love leadership.
Good luck!
